Gardaí in Cork have appealed the public for help in tracing those behind an arson attack in which the home of a woman (87) was targeted and set alight.

Gardaí in Gurranebraher believe the home of the woman on Morrogh Lane off Blarney Street was targeted in error when an accelerant was poured through the letter box and set alight.

The alarm was raised at around 5am by a neighbour.

Two gardaí broke down the door and rescued the woman from the smoke filled house. All three were taken to the Mercy University Hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation.

Gardaí in Gurranebraher believe the attack was a case of mistaken identity and have appealed to anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the Blarney Street area between 4.30am and 5.15am to contact them on (021) 494 6200.
