Tullamore is without a Garda station following the demolition yesterday of the town's 65-year-old barracks and the adjoining former fire station. The combined site will accommodate a modern and enlarged new Garda station.
When the station was built in 1935 the local force numbered 16. That has grown to almost 50, so conditions had become very cramped. The £2 million complex is expected to be in use by next year.
