THE Garda is to deploy the "Stinger" spike system to deflate the tyres of stolen cars during pursuit operations.
The system has been tested and is considered suitable for use against stolen cars, but only where it is believed another offence has been committed by the driver and occupants.
Extensive training of traffic officers and gardai in areas with a high incidence of crime involving stolen vehicles is to begin shortly.
The "Stinger" is a compact, lightweight tyre deflator consisting of a plastic mat fitted with hollow 40 mm spikes.
The spikes pierce the tyre of the car and deflate it gently so that it does not suddenly go out of control.
British police forces have been using the device successfully in recent years. However, effective use depends on precise teamwork by officers in at least three cars.
The stolen cars are forced into relatively safe, and preferably unpopulated areas in co ordinated operations, often requiring aerial support from helicopters fitted with infra-red video equipment.
The "Stinger" equipment will be issued to officers who pass the required competence tests. Its use will be subject to the Criminal Law Act, 1976 where a serious offence such as armed robbery, malicious, damage, or escape from lawful custody has taken place.
