Det Garda Ben O'Sullivan, who was injured in the attack in which his colleague, Jerry McCabe, was killed by an IRA gunman in 1996, is to receive a second Scott Gold Medal, the highest bravery award for police officers.
He is the first member of the force to receive this award twice.
Det Garda O'Sullivan still carries bullet shrapnel in his head and body from the time he was shot while escorting a cash delivery van in Adare, Co Limerick, in June, 1996.
He received his first Scott Medal in 1994 for disarming a deranged man who had been pointing a loaded shotgun at motorists in Co Limerick in January, 1992.
The detective and a colleague overpowered the man and prised the shotgun from his hands. On June 7th, 1996, Det Garda O'Sullivan and Det Garda McCabe were ambushed by a heavily armed IRA gang. Det Garda McCabe died after he was hit by a burst of automatic fire from the IRA gang which was attempting to rob the delivery van.
Four IRA members are serving terms for the manslaughter of Det Garda McCabe.
