Garda appeal for witnesses to shooting in Dublin pub

Gardai are appealing for witnesses to a shooting at a pub in Dublin's city centre in which a Spanish tourist was injured.

The woman was in Sadler's, Parkgate Street, at 9.30 p.m. on Saturday when a moped pulled up outside, said gardai.

A man opened the doors of the pub and fired once from a sawn-off, double-barrelled shot gun.

The woman, who is in her 40s, was struck by pellets in both thighs. She was treated at the scene by emergency services and later at the Mater Hospital, where her condition was yesterday described as "stable and not life-threatening".

Gardai said they are working on the theory that this may be an attack on the premises rather than an individual and that it was not a personal attack on the tourist. "No one was singled out. We are not sure what is behind the attack." The Spanish tourist was "in the wrong place at the wrong time".

A spokesman for the pub said there was "no vendetta" against the pub. He said the general manager of the pub was outside when the attacker arrived. The man on the moped looked "peculiar" and fired at the door of the pub, said the spokesman.

Gardai seized CCTV footage from the pub and adjoining premises and are analysing it.

After the shooting, the perpetrator drove up Conyngham Road. He is described as being aged between 20 and 25 and between five feet seven and five feet nine inches in height.

He was wearing a black jacket and blue jeans. At the time of the attack, he was wearing a black motorcycle helmet with a clear visor.
