An order which closed kitchen facilities at a leading Galway hotel over the weekend was lifted by the Western Health Board yesterday.

The closure order, issued on Friday, was lifted to allow the Galway Ryan Hotel, on the Dublin Road, to accept bookings for dinner last night.

No details have been released by the WHB, but a spokesperson confirmed that concerns over public health had prompted the order.

Environmental health officers closed the kitchen facilities because they posed, or were likely to pose, "a grave and immediate danger to public health".

The hotel's manager was unavailable for comment yesterday, although a spokeswoman said the hotel had "structural difficulties" which had been remedied since the weekend. She declined to give details.

The company last night issued a statement in which it said it was "very concerned" at the health board findings. It had decided to employ an independent health adviser to assess the health and safety standards in all its hotels.

"Ryan Hotels are committed to implementing any recommendations which may arise as a result of this appointment, as a matter of priority."
