Puerto Baquerizo Moreno - Authorities have arrested the captain and crew of a stranded oil tanker that leaked hundreds of tonnes of fuel oil near Ecuador's Galapagos Islands. Officials believe they have narrowly avoided a full-blown environmental catastrophe.
"There's been no environmental catastrophe," Ecuador's Environment Minister, Mr Rodolfo Redon, said from the mainland, as an international crew of workers finished cleaning up some seven tonnes of oil off the beaches of Santa Cruz island. So far, he said, four pelicans have died and 42 other animals "have been coated in oil."
