Supporters travelling to and from, the GAA football finals at Croke Park on Sunday have been warned not to let the revelry get in the way of safe driving.
The National Safety Council Issued the warning to all 1(11- dare, Galway, Laois and Tyrone fans travelling to Dublin and the message focuses on three main
"Do not drink and drive"; "Do not speed"; and "Always wear a seat belt - front and rear." The council also advises groups to nominate a designated non-drinking driver for travelling to and from the finals.
The chief executive of the council, Mr Pat Costello, said they would rather not have to issue this warning at a time when excitement and expectation are building up.
"Unfortunately, we know only too well that occasions such as this one tend to be high risk for crashes on our roads. With alcohol a seemingly indispensable element of the pre- and post-match celebrations for many fans, drink driving is of particular concern."
He said that a designated non-drinking driver should be nominated by a group. "This should be settled in advance of setting out - after the match Is not the time to decide who Is going to drive home," he said.
"Even with spirits running high, events of recent weeks should be a reminder to all of the tragedy and suffering caused by excessive speed, recklessness and lack of consideration for other road users," Mr Costello stated.
