Lima - The announcement by Peru's National Election Council (JNE) that it has registered President Alberto Fujimori's second presidential re-election nomination was greeted with violent street clashes in Lima, where 2,000 protesters tried to force their way into the JNE offices, Michael McCaughan reports.
Mr Fujimori was first elected to office in 1990, after which he closed down congress and revised the constitution, which now allows for one presidential re-election period. He argues that his first presidential period did not count, as he was elected under the old constitutional regime, which is now void.
