Further arrest over murder

A second man was arrested yesterday in connection with the murder of dissident loyalist, Alan McCullough.

McCullough was taken from his Lower Shankill home in west Belfast last week. His body was discovered in a shallow grave on the outskirts of Belfast on Thursday following a massive police search operation.

The UDA-affiliated Ulster Freedom Fighters admitted murdering McCullough, a leading member of Johnny Adair's notorious C Company. The dead man's father, UDA leader William McCullough, was shot dead by republicans in 1981.

McCullough's family pleaded for no retaliation. His brother, Kenny, said the murderers were known to loyalists in the area but said "Anybody else getting killed is not going to bring my brother back."

"My brother has gone and I don't want another family to go through what we have gone through," he said.

Alan McCullough had fled to Scotland in February with Adair's wife Gina, their close associate John White and other supporters after the UDA leadership drove them out of the Lower Shankill.

He only returned to Northern Ireland a fortnight before he disappeared after believing he had negotiated a lifting of the death threat against him.

Last night a group of around 60 women and children walked along the Shankill Road to protest at McCullough's murder.
