A 22-year-old woman whose death sparked a bitter dispute between her parents and her husband over where she would be buried will finally be laid to rest today, a week after her death.
Fr Oscar O'Leary, the chaplain for the Traveller community in Cork, will deliver today's homily at the funeral Mass in Kilcoran church in Co Limerick of Kathleen McCarthy O'Reilly. She will be buried afterwards at Kilcoran cemetery.
A close friend of the McCarthy family and a member of the Franciscan order, Fr O'Leary said the family wished the funeral to be a private affair.
Ms McCarthy's final resting place was the subject of a High Court application this week.
Her partner, Timothy O'Reilly, wanted to bury his late wife in Bruff, Co Limerick, but this was completely against the wishes of her parents.
The cemetery is being viewed as a compromise arrangement with members of both families, who are distantly related, already buried there.
Ms Justice Elizabeth Dunne ruled on Tuesday that both families should be allowed to hold separate wakes for the young mother of two, who was a member of the settled Traveller community.
The McCarthy family held a wake for Kathleen at O'Connors funeral home in Cork city on Wednesday night.
Her body was transferred yesterday to St Senan's funeral home in Shanagolden, Co Limerick, where the O'Reilly family held a wake for her last night.
Her body, which arrived in the Co Limerick village at 3.20pm yesterday afternoon, was carried into the funeral parlour in an American-style stainless-steel casket.
No members of the McCarthy family were present, which was in keeping with the spirit of the High Court order which enabled both families the opportunity to hold a wake for her.
Large crowds are expected to attend today's funeral Mass and local gardaí have confirmed that they will be maintaining a significant but discreet presence in the area.
All shops and pubs in the Shanagolden, Foynes and Askeaton areas of Co Limerick were closed yesterday afternoon ahead of last night's wake.
