A mention for a good cause. Breast cancer is a serious issue in Ireland and causes much grief to women afflicted with it. There are good stories and bad ones. One of the bad ones I heard recently concerned a young woman who was told that, having lost one breast, she would need chemotherapy to save the other.
But she was in the early stages of pregnancy and was warned by doctors that the radium could have fatal consequences for the foetus. A decision had to be made and she made it. She opted to save the baby and sacrifice herself. The child - a baby girl - was born, and the mother, less than 40 years of age, died.
On Friday next at the Vienna Woods Hotel in Cork, the Breast Cancer Clinic at the Cork University Hospital as well the CURA Pregnancy Counselling Service at Paul Street, Cork - organisers of the event - will host a barbecue, "from 9.00 p.m. 'till late", as they put it, to help raise money for two good causes. Rob Strong and his band will be the featured event and tickets will cost £15.
Mary Wilkins will be available at 086-8375025 or Kieran, her husband, at 087-2592134 to provide further information.
