Fulham were today chasing new transfer targets after blaming Sergei Rebrov's agent for the collapse of his cut-price switch from Tottenham.
The Cottagers were close to finalising a deal for the Ukrainian striker, but the player's representative Sandor Varga raised his "personal concerns" about the move on Friday.
Fulham chairman Mohamed Al Fayed, despite announcing a wave of financial cutbacks this weekend, had authorised a downpayment of less than Stg£1million for the player who cost £11m from Dinamo Kiev in summer 2000.
Personal terms with Rebrov had been agreed but the club insist the move broke down after Varga, who had earlier revealed the player would have been taking a significant pay cut, intervened.
Jean Tigana will now look elsewhere for a new striker - possibly at a loanee from Europe - as Varga arranges to meet officials from Fenerbahce today over a prospective move to Turkey.
But Varga, who said on Friday that uncertainty over Tigana's future was the reason for the deal stalling, revealed he has not completely given up hope of doing business with Fulham.
He said today: "If Fulham find someone better, that's up to them. But if they want Sergei, he could play for them.
"It's still 50-50 and everything could turn in a good direction with Fulham."
Rebrov has dismissed claims that he is suffering from depression following the collapse of his move.
The Ukrainian has emphatically denied the reports but added he is angry at being left in the dark at White Hart Lane.
"I have no crisis but I am seriously disturbed with the fact I am not playing. I am very disappointed with the situation but I continue to work and prepare as usual," he told Ukrainian television channel Novy TV.
Rebrov also insisted he was keen on a move to Fulham as his family are settled in London, but he claimed he would have found it hard because of the competition at the club.
"Fulham would have been the best choice for me, but I am aware of the fact it would be difficult for me to break into the first team because they have three or four very good forwards. I also haven't had much first team experience in the last year," he added.
