Washington - US General Wesley Clark, unexpectedly replaced last week as NATO Supreme Commander, had disagreements during the attack on Kosovo not only with the White House but also with a top British commander, Newsweek reports in its current issue.

Without giving sources, the magazine says Gen Clark was ignored when he ordered helicopters to land on the airstrip at Pristina airport to prevent Russian transports from landing there.

Gen Mike Jackson, the British commander on the ground, told Gen Clark: "I'm not going to start World War III for you," - an interchange that prompted both men to appeal to their respective political leaders for backing, according to Newsweek. Gen Jackson was supported, and Gen Clark wasn't, the magazine says.
