GARDAÍ HAVE made a fresh appeal for information about the murder of a Limerick taxi driver who was beaten to death 21 years ago.
Henry Hurley from the South Circular Road was murdered at Reascamogue, Sixmilebridge, Co Clare on July 7th, 1989.
The 32-year-old was last seen alive about 3am near Setright’s Cross, Co Clare, in the company of two men. His body was found just over 12 hours later near his 1989 registered white Nissan Sunny in the Cratloe Hills.
It is believed the taxi driver was murdered by two English men whom he collected earlier the same night.
The Garda Serious Crime Review Team is hoping that new information will be made available to them and yesterday leaflets were handed out in Limerick city in an attempt to jog memories.
Gardaí at Ennis, supported by the Serious Crime Review Team at the National Bureau of Criminal Investigation, are investigating the murder.
Leaflets were handed out on Sarsfield Street taxi rank as part of the Garda’s fresh appeal for information.
Supt John Scanlon is seeking the assistance of the public in identifying the two men who were with Mr Hurley the night he was murdered.
“Maybe someone saw these men being picked up in Limerick city by Henry on the night. Or maybe these were not from the area and were staying in the Cratloe/Sixmilebridge area at the time,” he said.
“I am appealing to anybody who might have any information that would help us with our inquiry to come forward to Crimestoppers now.”
Mr Hurley had been working as a taxi driver for more than six years.
He came from a well-known Limerick family and was popular among other drivers.
An English national was charged in connection with his death but the case collapsed in 1991 following a legal difficulty.
Crimestoppers are offering a reward for any information and callers may remain anonymous.
Gardaí can be contacted on 1800-250025 or 065-6848100.
