Air and ferry passengers travelling between Ireland and France yesterday suffered severe disruption due to a nationwide French strike but services should return to normal today.
French air traffic controllers, dockers and other public sector employees took industrial action over the government's proposed pension reforms.
Aer Lingus operated just one Dublin-Paris return flight yesterday and all others were cancelled. A spokesman said all services should return to normal today with return Dublin-Paris, Dublin-Nice and Cork-Paris flights on schedule. There will be an additional return Dublin-Nice flight to accommodate passengers unable to travel yesterday. This will depart Dublin at 4 p.m.
All Ryanair flights from Ireland to France were cancelled yesterday. Additional flights today and tomorrow will be laid on for passengers who have had to reschedule travel arrangements. There will be two extra return flights between Dublin-Paris Beauvais and one extra Shannon-Paris Beauvais return flight.
Other additional flights will operate from Stansted to French regional airports.
A Ryanair spokeswoman advised passengers with reservations on yesterday's flights to contact the airline as she said travellers were entitled to another flight at no extra cost, or a refund.
Irish Ferries diverted its Cherbourg sailing to Roscoff on Monday night. The return sailing from Roscoff was delayed by four hours to accommodate passengers who were unaware of the strike. A spokesman said sailings should be back to normal today.
Meanwhile, the Italian airline Alitalia strike over job cuts is continuing with the cancellation of national and international flights.
The airline advises passengers to check with its information centre in Dublin at 01-677 5171. An Aer Lingus spokesman said its flights to Italy were operating as usual.
