Gramat - Seven potholers who spent 10 days trapped underground in south-western France were found and brought to the surface last night. They entered the caves at Vitarelles on November 11th but severe storms caused waters to rise, cutting them off from exits.

Their plight had gripped the French nation as scores of experts scoured the caves for signs of them.

They were finally found yesterday when rescuers squeezed down a shaft drilled through the rock and came across two of the missing men edging towards them. The other five were found in the main chamber of the caves.
