Paris - France's main far-right party, the National Front, is winning back supporters 18 months after an acrimonious split, according to a survey in yesterday's Le Monde newspaper. plumetted fell from more than 15 per cent in regional elections in March 1998 to 5.7 per cent in European elections last June.
The survey showed that 17 per cent were "completely or strongly in agreement" with Mr Le Pen, just 3 per cent less than he scored in March 1997 and March 1998, before the acrimonious split. Some 62 per cent said the front was a danger, compared to 73 per cent in May 1999, and 60 per cent said the same of the Mr Megret's National Republican Movement, against 68 per cent a year ago. Nearly 60 per cent of French people believed there were too many immigrants, and 64 per cent said the police should have greater powers.
