Operation Freeflow performed "superbly" over the Christmas period, reducing travel times by up to 50 per cent, according to the AA.

AA Roadwatch, which monitored the Freeflow project in December, said notorious bottlenecks such as Knocklyon, Whitehall and the Lucan Road freed up dramatically, while daytime delays in the city centre were most likely due to shoppers.

The AA's public affairs manager, Mr Conor Faughnan, has now called for the introduction of Operation Freeflow on a year-round basis.
