The mother escaped after jumping from a first-floor window, while the family's six-year-old daughter escaped the tragedy because she was at school.

The alarm was raised by neighbours shortly before 9.30 am, but the fire could have taken hold some time before, according to fire officers.

Investigators say the blaze started in a children's bedroom.

They confirmed smoke alarms had been fitted in the flat in Sunnybraes Terrace but it is not known whether they had gone off.
