A roadside bomb killed four US marines in Iraq’s western Anbar province, the deadliest attack in that area in months, it was reported today.
The marines were killed on Friday, but no other details of the incident were released.
Meanwhile, the US military said it killed 14 Shiite extremists today in clashes in Baghdad.
The military said it used drones and Bradley fighting vehicles to kill the militants in several clashes in the militia strongholds of Sadr City and Shula.
Anbar was once a stronghold for insurgents battling US forces. But in the past year, the vast desert province has largely been calmed with the rise of the Awakening Council movement - Sunni fighters who now turn their guns on al Qaeda instead of US forces.
Friday's attack in Anbar was the most lethal in the province since September 6, when four marines were killed in combat. The military did not release details of those deaths either.
