Four young men with addresses in Armagh are due to appear before Galway District Court today, charged with causing criminal damage to the statue of Padraic O Conaire at Eyre Square, Galway and with stealing the head of the statue. The four, who were arrested on Friday afternoon some hours after the decapitation was reported, appeared before a special sitting of the District Court on Friday night and were remanded in custody.
Before the special sitting on Friday were: Mr Garret Leahy (20), of The Hermitage; Gavin McNaney (18), of Ashley Avenue; John McManus (20), of Rock Road; and Garry O'Connor (19), of Drumbeola Avenue. They are further charged with using threatening and abusive language and behaviour.
