FOUR men were remanded in custody for a month at Belmarsh Magistrate's Court in London yesterday, charged with possession of explosives and conspiracy to cause an explosion.
Amid tight security, Mr Brian McHugh (30), unemployed, from Hammersmith, west London; Mr Patrick Kelly (30), unemployed, of Drumming, Ardcuw, Co Longford; Mr James Murphy (25), a school groundsman from Chelsea, London, and Mr Michael Phillips, a British Airways apprentice engineer, for whom no address was stated, were remanded until October 9th.
Surrounded by armed police officers, they were charged with conspiring to cause an explosion and with possession of explosives on or before September 23rd.
None of the men spoke throughout the hour long hearing. However, the Magistrate, Mr David Cooper, refused a request for bail by Mr Murphy and rejected an application by Mr Kelly and Mr Phillips for a High Court injunction preventing reporting of the case.
Except for Mr Murphy, they waived their right to attend their next remand hearing.
