The former chief executive of the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, Mr Cian Ó Tighearnaigh appeared in a Dublin court this evening on a fraud charge.
Mr Ó’Tighearnaigh was arrested by appointment at a Dublin police station earlier today.
He was charged in Dublin District Court of carrying on business for a fraudulent purpose at the ISPCC offices, where he was chief executive, in December 1998.
Mr Ó’Tighearnaigh was remanded on bail until January 8th.
The court was told more charges would be preferred against Mr Ó’Tighearnaigh at his next appearance in court.
When charged, Mr Ó’Tighearnaigh said: "I am not guilty of that charge."
His solicitor, Mr Liam Guider, said the charges against his client would be "strenuously defended".
Mr Ó’Tighearnaigh resigned from the ISPCC on August 15th this year.
