Former Fianna Fail Kevin Boland dies aged 84

The former Fianna Fáil minister, Mr Kevin Boland has died in Dublin at the age of 84. Mr Boland was born in 1917

The former Fianna Fáil minister, Mr Kevin Boland has died in Dublin at the age of 84. Mr Boland was born in 1917. He was elected to the Dáil in 1957. He served as the Minister of Defence under Eamonn de Valera’s Fianna Fáil government.

He also served as the Minister for Social Welfare and Local Government.

Mr Boland resigned his ministerial post during the Arms Crisis of 1970 in sympathy with the late Mr Neil Blaney and Mr Charles Haughey who were dismissed for an alleged conspiracy to supply arms to republicans.

He went on to resign completely from the Fianna Fáil party and the organisation.

In 1973, he led a legal challenge in the Supreme Court to Northern Ireland’s Sunningdale Agreement.
