A former politician is to appear in court next month on more than 70 charges of child sexual abuse. The man was a member at different times of the Dail and Seanad over many years.
Gardai began an investigation after a complaint of sexual abuse was made over a year ago.
The inquiry was widened when other people subsequently came forward. At least one other Garda station became involved in the investigation.
The complainants are understood to be adults who claim they were abused by the man when they were children. Some of the allegations date back more than 30 years.
A file was sent to the Director of Prosecutions, Mr Eamonn Barnes, last month and he has decided that the man should be prosecuted. He is due to appear in Belturbet District Court in Co Cavan on October 8th.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was involved in national politics for more than two decades and also served on several local bodies.
He retired from active politics in the 1980s and is married with children.
