A forensic scientist has completed a technical examination of a house where a 25-year-old man was fatally stabbed in Cork city early yesterday morning.
The scientist from the State Laboratory had been requested by gardai to examine the house at St Rita’s Avenue in Gurranebraher where the dead man was found yesterday morning.
Gardaí under Supt Con Cadogan of Gurranebraher Garda Station are hoping the forensic expert will be able to help them establish the exact circumstances of how the man was stabbed.
The deceased was last night named by gardaí as Lee McCarthy, a native of London who had been living in Cork for a period of time where he had stayed in hostel accommodation.
Meanwhile gardaí last night went to court to obtain an extension to allow them to continue to designate the house where McCarthy was found as a crime scene.
At a special sitting of Cork District Court, Judge Brian Sheridan granted the application which allows gardaí to continue to designate the house at St Rita’s Avenue a crime scene for a further 48 hours.
Meanwhile gardaí in Gurranebraher are continuing to question a 31-year-old man arrested around 9.25am yesterday for questioning about Mr McCarthy’s death.
The man - who is from the Gurranebraher area - can be held for a total of 24 hours but questioning was suspended over night so the man’s detention period is due to expire late this afternoon.
