A walk by a party of foreign students along the Mayo coastline turned to tragedy yesterday when one of them slipped and fell down a sheer cliff face.
The body of the male could be spotted in the water at Cloughmore, on Achill Island’s Atlantic Drive, last evening but it could not be retrieved due to heavy seas.
The Achill RNLI lifeboat and a Coast Guard helicopter waited at the scene for several hours for conditions to improve so that they could recover the body. The youth, who was in his early 20s, has not yet been named.
