GLASGOW - James "Five Bellies" Gardner (32), friend and former minder of the soccer star Paul Gascoigne, yesterday was fined £500 after being found guilty of assaulting a Glasgow Celtic fan in a public house brawl. But the Glasgow Rangers midfielder Charlie Miller (20) walked free after he and another man were cleared of charges arising from the same incident.
Mr Miller, from Glasgow, and Mr Steven McDermott (31), from Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, had been accused of breach of the peace and assault at the pub in Houston, Renfrewshire, in March 1996. Gardner was found guilty of assaulting Mr John McKee, a bystander, when he intervened in the dispute.
