The company which manufactures safety goggles and helmets for industry, has been in Longford since 1962. It was taken over last year by Tyco, which also has plants in Athlone and Tullamore.

Fonderman is closing down after a decision by the parent group to consolidate its operations at plants in Ireland and Britain.

Negotiations with SIPTU on the terms of redundancy for the workforce are to get underway soon.
