Brisbane - Residents in the Australian port city of Townsville this morning began cleaning up the devastation left by weekend floods that killed one person and caused more than £4 million of damage.
The national and state governments announced emergency aid and the acting Prime Minister, Mr Tim Fischer, was due to fly to the city in the far north of Queensland state, where a storm dumped more than a half-metre of rain over the weekend.
Police said they had found the body of a 47-year-old wheelchair-bound man who drowned after his car was swept away by floodwaters on Saturday.
Another man is still missing after disappearing while swimming in the flood-swollen Millstream River.
