Five people killed in accidents on roads

Two women were killed in Co Donegal when their car collided with a lorry shortly after midday yesterday. The women, who are understood to have been over 80 years old, were from Co Derry. They were killed on the road between Muff and Quigley's Point in the north of Co Donegal.

Mr Derek Turley, of Glenwood, Athlone, Co Westmeath, died on Sunday in the James Connolly Memorial Hospital as a result of injuries he sustained in a hit-and-run accident. Mr Turley, who was in his early 20s, was injured when a white Nissan Micra car struck him near the Hitching Post public house on the Lucan-Maynooth road at about 3 a.m. on Sunday. Gardai say that the car had an 86 KE registration, and may have been stolen in Maynooth earlier in the night.

In Co Cork, a 22-year-old man was killed when his car collided with a guard-rail in Garryduff at 4.15 a.m. yesterday morning. His family has requested that his name not be released to the media.

In Northern Ireland, Mr Paul Hughes (22) died after the car in which he was a passenger collided with another vehicle on the main Dungannon-Ballygawley road on Saturday evening. Mr Hughes played for the Killeeshil football team and was secretary of the club. The body of a woman in her 40s was taken from the Grand Canal near Portobello Bridge, Dublin, yesterday.

Gardai said they would not be releasing her name until her next-of-kin are informed. Foul play is not suspected.
