A young woman died when the motorcycle on which she was a pillion passenger went out of control and crashed in Co Galway today, bringing to five the number of people killed on the roads since Thursday.

Gardaí at Kilchreest are investigating the collision that took place at 1pm today at Castleboy, Kilchreest.

The male driver of the motorbike was taken to University Hospital Galway with injuries that are not believed to be life threatening, a Garda statement said.

The Gort to Loughrea road is closed at present and motorists are asked to avoid using this route if possible.

The woman was the second person to die on the roads this weekend.

A 23-year-old Polish man died early yesterday when the car he was travelling lost control and crashed at Warrenstown, Drumree, Co Meath.  Gardai named him tonight as Tomasz Kaminski.

Gardaí have also named the victims of three separate road crashes last Thursday and Friday.

Alexsadrs Alajevs (36), with an address at Mill Road, Corbally, Co Limerick died when his car hit a bridge at Annagh, Birr, Co Offaly early on Thursday morning.

The Latvian national was pronounced dead at Tullamore General Hospital a short time later.

Meanwhile 19-year-old Eamon O’Neill of Granaghan Beg, Newmarket on Fergus, Co Clare died when his car crashed on the Sixmilebridge to Newmarket On Fergus road at 6.15am on the same day.

Gardai also named the 23-year-old man killed in a crash at Dough, Lahinch, Co Clare on Friday as Ryan Haran of Lahinch Road, Ennistymon.

Two men also died in Northern Ireland early today when a stolen car crashed on the Lisburn Road.
