Five civilians, including three members of one family, were killed and 37 wounded today in separate attacks by suspected Muslim rebels in Indian Kashmir, security officials said.
A grenade attack on a crowded market in Shopian, about 50 km (30 miles) south of Srinagar, summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir state, killed at least two civilians and wounded 36, a paramilitary official told reporters.
It was the third grenade attack in four days in the Himalayan region. Thirty people were injured in two grenade attacks on Friday.
Police said militants shot dead three members of a family in the Sogam area of Kupwara, near the Pakistan border to the northwest of Srinagar.
A man from the same family was seriously wounded in the shooting, they said.
No militant group has claimed responsibility for either attack.
Today's violence comes a day ahead of a meeting between US President George W. Bush and Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf at Camp David.
