Five children who defied efforts to persuade them to leave their rural home in Idaho for five days ended the stand-off last night.

The children voluntarily came out of the isolated house.

"The children were taken to a place of safety and are with their family doctor at this time. The children are in good shape," Sergeant Rob Rahn of the Bonner County Sheriff's Department said.

The children were taken to a nearby hospital, where spokeswoman Ms Susan Montgomery said: Their condition is very good. There are no injuries. They are ambulatory and looking fine.
