A retired schoolteacher and fisherman whose body was recovered from waters off Castletownbere, Co Cork, last week has been buried.

Pearse Lyne (66), a father of four, died after his boat overturned in Bantry Bay at Pulleen harbour near Garranes to the west of Bere Island last Friday. A former principal of Castletownbere national school, Mr Lyne was an experienced fisherman. His death was the second sea tragedy in the area last week, following the drowning of John O’Leary (58) off Cod’s Head on August 13th.

At the Sacred Heart Church in Castletownbere yesterday, three other fishermen who drowned last week were remembered. Michael Galvin (64) and Noel Dickinson, in his late 20s, died on August 13th when their boat sank off Co Clare.

On August 14th, Martin Burns (51) died in a fishing incident off Co Mayo.
