Ankara - The German Foreign Minister, Mr Joschka Fischer, said on a visit to Ankara yesterday he would do everything possible for Turkey to be accepted as a candidate for EU membership.
Mr Fischer, however, sent a strong symbolic message to Ankara by holding the first meeting of a one-day trip at the offices of a human rights group whose leader is in jail.
Mr Fischer said: "For us, the European Union is no religious club, no Christian club. It's a community of values. We want Turkey to come to Europe and will do all we can to allow this to happen."
