Thirty Irish firms are to take part in a trade mission to Russia coinciding with a state visit by President Mary McAleese, it has been announced.
The firms, from a range of sectors including engineering, construction, food and drink, will spend time meeting existing and potential customers and partners.
Mrs McAleese begins her four-day visit to Russia tomorrow.
Minister of State for Trade and Commerce Billy Kelleher said the trip was an opportunity to showcase Irish business to an important trade partner.
"Russia is a significant trading partner for Ireland and the country’s continued economic development has resulted in a wide range of business and commercial opportunities for Irish firms".
"We want to give Irish firms opportunities to strengthen their business links with Russia and help new market-entrants to land their first breakthrough sale there," he added.
A key aspect of the trip will be a joint knowledge event between the Russian National Nanotechnology Company (Rusnano) and Science Foundation Ireland.
Ireland and Russia have similar national research and development goals with a strong focus on funding research in nanotechnology, life science and ICT, according to Mr Kelleher.
According to the Government, Russia is Europe’s largest emerging market and Irish exports to the country grew by over 66 per cent in the first five months of this year.
Frank Ryan, Enterprise Ireland chief executive Frank Ryan said he was confident that the participation of Irish firms in the mission "will further boost the already vibrant and dynamic trade partnership between Ireland and Russia".
