Lisbon - Hundreds of firemen fought to contain fierce forest fires yesterday near the Portuguese coastal resort of Cascais, and officials said one beach-side camp site had been evacuated and several houses were on fire.
Four firemen were treated for burns in hospital in Cascais, 25 km west of Lisbon, as firefighters battled a series of blazes in open country between the town and the hill-top resort of Sintra, a beauty spot popular with tourists. A camp site near the popular surfing beach of Guincho, outside Cascais, was evacuated because of the approaching flames, officials said.
