The fire broke out at about 7.30 a.m. at the ESB's substation at Park Drive, Mill town. It caused a temporary loss of power to homes in the Dublin 2, 4 and 6 areas.

An ESB spokeswoman said engineers were deployed almost immediately to tackle the situation and supply was restored to most customers by 10 a.m. She described the fire as "significant" and said engineers were seeking to establish the cause.
