The Irish documentary film, Chavez - Inside the Coup, has received two prizes, including the award for outstanding international television production of the year, at the Banff Television Festival in Alberta, Canada, one of the world's most prestigious television events.
It won the Global Television Grand Prize for best production, which carries a cash prize of $50,000, and the award for Best Information and Current Affairs Production.
For the overall Grand Prize, the film won out over 82 international productions in 14 categories, which had been selected for the festival from an entry of over 900 productions from 39 countries.
The documentary, depicting the attempted overthrow of the Venezuelan President, Mr Hugo Chavez, defeated competition that included such high-profile TV series as The West Wing and the BBC production of Daniel Deronda, both of which took awards in drama categories.
The Chavez documentary was produced by the Irish company, Power Pictures, in association with the Irish Film Board. It was directed by Kim Bartley and Donnacha O'Briain, and was broadcast as part of the True Lives series on RTÉ earlier this year.
Its producer, David Power of Power Pictures, commented: "This is phenomenal, to win the top award at a major festival and to beat such world-class competition is testament to Kim and Donnacha's extraordinary work."
Rod Stoneman, chief executive of the Irish Film Board, said: "Congratulations to Power Pictures. This is an amazing documentary and deserves this recognition on the world stage."
Now in its 24th year, the Banff Television Festival takes place at the Fairmont Banff Springs in the Canadian Rockies.
