The aftermath of yesterday's sectarian clashes in North Belfast continued to be felt today as British army bomb disposal experts defused a pipe bomb at the rear of a house in Newington Street.

The RUC confirmed today that fifteen RUC officers were injured in yesterday's violence.

Four were hurt when a blast bomb was thrown at their vehicle on Halliday's Road at about 9.20 p.m. Others were injured as they tried to stop rival gangs clashing on the Limestone Road.

The incidents began in the afternoon when Catholic and Protestant gangs taunted each other for about an hour before hurling missiles at each other. Shots from a hand gun were also fired.

The RUC said about 200 people were involved in the incidents that also spread to roads around Clifton Park Avenue in North Belfast where gunfire was also heard. A woman (19) was taken to hospital with leg wounds.

Earlier, a bomb exploded on the Crumlin Road near the scene of the violence, and another device was made safe by British army technical experts.

A "pipe-bomb type device" was made safe in the back yard of a house in Newington St near the Limestone Road while a fourth explosive, also described by the RUC as a "pipebomb-type device", was defused earlier this morning.

The device was found shortly before 2 a.m. on the Woodvale Road in North Belfast. The road was closed of for a time but was reopened.
