Fianna Fáil's national executive this evening discussed leader Micheál Martin's intention to restructure the party branch in Bertie Ahern's former Dublin Central constituency and to transfer the branch’s assets, including the headquarters at St Luke’s, to the party’s general secretary.

The special meeting of the ardchomhairle was to consider the expulsion of six members in response to the findings of the Mahon Tribunal, but following their resignations from the party, the organisation in Dublin Central was the only item before the meeting.

According to a Fianna Fáil statement, the executive endorsed Mr Martin's response to the Mahon report "and expressed unequivocal condemnation of inappropriate fundraising activity in the past".

Speaking afterward, party whip Seán Ó Fearghaíl said: "It has been a very difficult week for the party, with many members across the country feeling angry and let down.

"However, there is also a strong sense that the swift and resolute response from the party leadership has established our firm rejection of these practices and can be the beginning of the process of rebuilding trust in politics across the country.”

Mr Ó Fearghaíl said the party's rules and procedures committee would examine the Mahon report in relation to other members of Fianna Fáil who may have received inappropriate payments.
