FF seeks report into girl's death

THE delay in publishing the report of the inquiry into the Kelly Fitzgerald case may be raised in the Dail

THE delay in publishing the report of the inquiry into the Kelly Fitzgerald case may be raised in the Dail. Ms Maire Geoghegan Quinn TD said in a statement if the Minister for Health did not publish the report shortly, "I will be seeking a full explanation from him in the Dail."

The Fianna Fail spokeswoman on health said she understood the report was with the Minister for some time. "Given the public interest in the case, I am calling on him to publish the full report."

Kelly Fitzgerald died aged 15 in a London hospital in February 1993, three days after arriving from Knock Airport. She had been on an at risk register in London until 1991. The following year she came to live with her parents, Desmond and Susan Fitzgerald, at their Charlestown, Co Mayo, farm. While there, she suffered what the coroner at her inquest called an "appalling saga of neglect and cruelty."

Her parents were sentenced to 18 months in prison in the Republic in 1994 after admitting wilful neglect. They were released within the past month.
