Normal services resumed last night on Irish Ferries' cross-channel routes following the 24-hour strike by SIPTU members over the dismissal of a shop steward. The company said last night that the Isle of Inishfree sailed from Rosslare to Pembroke at 9.30 p.m. yesterday and the Isle of Inishmore sailed at 9.45 p.m.
The strikers are still seeking the reinstatement of the shop steward, whom the company alleges raped another crew member, also in SIPTU, last November.
The shop steward denies the allegation and has not been charged with any criminal offence. The Labour Court has offered to hear the case early in October but there remains the possibility of further industrial action in the meantime.
