A man accused of murder told gardai he was paid £2,000 by his father to "frighten" a man having an affair with his mother, a jury in the Central Criminal Court has been told. Mr Andrew Brennan (28), of St Munchin's Street, St Mary's Park, has denied the murder of father of eight Mr Sean Colbert (53) of Lenihan Avenue, Prospect, Limerick, outside his home on August 9th, 1996.
Sgt Gerard McGrath told the court yesterday that Mr Brennan gave a statement to gardai during the murder investigation that implicated Mr Brennan's father.
Reading from the statement, Sgt McGrath said Mr Brennan claimed his father "organised" the shooting to "frighten" Mr Colbert. His father allegedly paid him £2,000 and gave another man £400.
Summing up for the prosecution, Mr Ralph Sutton SC, told the jury that confession statements allegedly made voluntarily by the defendant were corroborated by a scanner used on the night of the shooting.
Mr Martin Giblin SC, defending, said it was "Alice in Wonderland logic" to suggest the scanner was corroborative evidence.
Mr Justice Quirke will address the jury this morning before sending them out to consider a verdict.
