THE DEATH of a 68-year-old motorist in Co Carlow brings to 75 the number of people killed on the Republic’s roads this year.
The motorist died after his car struck a wall shortly before 1am on Monday at Ballyine on the Borris to Ballymurphy road in Co Carlow.
No other vehicle was involved and the man was the sole occupant of the car. He was taken to St Luke’s hospital in Kilkenny where he was pronounced dead.
Gardaí appealed for anyone who witnessed the incident to contact Carlow Garda station at 059-913 6620.
In a separate incident, gardaí investigating the deaths of two teenagers last week in a two-car crash have arrested a 27-year-old man for questioning.
The man was arrested at a house in the Gurranebraher area of Cork city shortly before 11am yesterday and brought to Gurranebraher Garda station for questioning.
He was detained under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act which allows gardaí hold suspects for 24 hours before charging or releasing them.
CJ Dolan (16) and Derry O’Callaghan (19) both from Hollyhill were killed in the collision last Thursday night in Knocknaheeny.
In Northern Ireland, police have identified the motorist killed in a road traffic crash on the Victoria Road outside Strabane, Co Tyrone as a serving member of the PSNI.
Gareth Gallagher (23) from Delwood, Eglington, Co Derry, was travelling to work in Strabane when his car left the road.
Elsewhere, the body of a 29-year-old angler was recovered from the sea in Co Clare yesterday. The angler had been fishing on Sunday when he was swept into the sea at the Bridges of Ross, near Loop Head.
