Marxist rebels detonated a roadside bomb yesterday that killed 14 Colombian police officers in one of the deadliest attacks this year against security forces.

The ambush, blamed on the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), happened as the officers drove near the Sierra Nevada mountains in the Caribbean province of Cesar, police reported.

Farc has been fighting a war for socialist revolution for 41 years in a conflict that kills thousands a year.

Outlawed leftist and right-wing groups are fighting for control of lands around the Sierra Nevada, which is sacred to local Indians. The battle is for coca crops, the raw material of cocaine.
