THE FAMILY of murdered Co Antrim businessman Geoff Kerr say they are still at a loss to understand why he was shot dead.
A member of the victim’s extended family said yesterday they could only think he was murdered in a case of mistaken identity. Mr Kerr (60), a financial adviser and member of the Ulster Unionist Party, was shot by men posing as Chinese food delivery staff who called to his home in the village of Templepatrick on Monday night.
Police have already ruled out dissident republican involvement and are following a number of leads in what appears a motiveless murder.
Among the lines of inquiry being considered by the PSNI is the possibility that Mr Kerr was shot for reasons unknown by loyalist paramilitaries. Detectives are also examining the possibility that the father of four was shot dead in connection with an attempted robbery or kidnapping.
They are also considering if Mr Kerr’s killers were looking for weapons in the knowledge that he was a member of a gun club. They are also making inquiries to establish if his murder was linked in some way to financial advice.
The PSNI is continuing to examine a partially burned BMW which was discovered at Glenavy, Co Antrim, about 16km (10 miles) from the scene of the crime.
Isobel Todd, an aunt of the dead man’s wife said the family could could only imagine that his murder was a case of mistaken identity.
