The family of Tipperary man Michael Dwyer said they were "shocked and devastated" by his tragic death in Bolivia.
Mr Dwyer was among three men shot dead in a clash between police and alleged anti-government mercenaries on Thursday.
Department of Foreign Affairs officials travelled from Argentina to Bolivia today to liaise with the authorities there to confirm Mr Dwyer's identity and to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
In a statement this evening, Mr Dwyer's family said they were "shocked and devastated by the tragic death of a beloved son and brother".
"They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of their wider family, friends and their local community. The Dwyer family ask for privacy during this very difficult time."
Mr Dwyer was born in June 1984.
He is the son of Martin and Caroline Dwyer, Ballinderry, Co Tipperary. Martin is an electrician and Caroline is a pharmaceutical engineer.
They also have two daughters, Aisling (25) and Ciara (21). They also have one other son, Emmett (14).
Mr Dwyer was a graduate of construction management from Galway Mayo Institute of Technology.
